Start with ownership

The single biggest predictor of whether an automation project pays off long-term is whether you own the result. Ask upfront: do you get admin access, documentation, and the ability to modify the workflow yourself, or does every change require going back to the vendor?

Ask how they scope

A partner who can’t tell you which parts of your process are safe to automate outright — versus which need a human in the loop — hasn’t done this enough times. Scoping should surface those tradeoffs before a single line of workflow gets built.

Ask what happens when it’s wrong

Every automation fails sometimes. What matters is what happens next: does it fail loudly and route to a human, or fail silently and leave you finding out from a customer complaint?
